Ticked!

Our car was hit while leaving Little Panda, Mia's Mandarin music class. I honked five times at this man, a senior citizen who probably should not be driving, but he still hit me. We're all okay, it was pretty minor, thank God!

The man did not answer me when I asked him at least three times if he had insurance after I yelled, "Did you not hear me beeping at you?" He just went to his car and put his head down like he was crying. Not a normal reaction for a parking lot fender bender. Given his reluctance to talk to me or share insurance info over a minor accident, I assumed this was not his first incident of late. Since he's decided to not talk to me, I think he might not understand English perhaps? I call the PO-lice. Never called 911 before. So FYI, if you call 911 on your cell, it really goes to the closest dispatch.

Before they arrive, I try to keep Mia busy with a snack and then try to talk to him again and find that he speaks perfect English. He tells me he's 72 and doesn't want trouble. He's still reluctant to give up his insurance information. Then I spot the cop car and wave him over to us and tell him that I called the police. He looks at me and asks, "why are you making trouble for me?" At the time I felt sorry for him because he had been crying, but now, I'm just pissed because he's the one that hit me! For all I know he's hard of hearing that is why he didn't hear the honking!

So I tell him I called the cops because he wasn't answering my question about insurance so I wanted to make sure there was a record of the incident. That's when he says he only put his head down because he was dizzy! I told him he shouldn't be driving. In the end all the officer did was make sure we exchanged info. The officer said he could not make a report because the incident happened on private property. I didn't realize the Sunnyvale Parks and Rec complex is private property. Whatever!

Anyhow, the man asked that we take care of it among ourselves and at the time I thought I would do that for him because it really looks pretty minor and because it turns out he's Korean and I feel sorry for him. But the more I think about it, I think I need to keep him from getting behind the wheel of a car. Do you think I should report it to his insurance regardless of my agreement with him to take care of it ourselves? What a headache.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Thankfully everyone is okay.

I talked w/ Ken about it. Sounds like you guys are doing the right thing, it's a pretty tough situation.

It was a very minor fender bender. Car is in the shop, the old man took the cheapest quote and went to negotiate the price down some more. I'm glad our car will get fixed so that we can return it to Subaru this December and get a minivan. Whoo Hoo! Can't wait to have automatic doors.
